Dice notation
Tabletop role-playing games write dice as a short notation: how many dice you roll and how many faces each die has. The dice roller reads this notation.
| Notation | Meaning |
|---|---|
1d20 | One twenty sided die: attacks, ability checks and saving throws. |
2d6+3 | Two six sided dice plus 3: like a weapon's damage. |
4d6 | Four six sided dice: when rolling ability scores, drop the lowest. |
1d20+5 | One twenty sided die plus 5: a check with a modifier of 5. |
1d100 | A hundred sided die, read as a percentage. |
How does a d20 test work?
When you try something, roll a d20 and add the relevant modifier. If the total equals or beats the difficulty class, you succeed. On an attack a natural 20 always hits and is a critical hit, a natural 1 always misses. Ability scores and modifiers are explained in the encyclopedia.
How to use it
Add dice with the dice buttons. Pressing the same die twice raises the count, as in 2d6.
Or type the expression yourself: 1d20+5, 2d6+1d4+3 or 4d6. Plus and minus both work.
When rolling a single d20, choose Advantage or Disadvantage: two d20 are rolled and the higher or lower counts.
Frequently asked questions
Are the results really random?
Yes. Rolls use the secure random number generator your browser uses for encryption, and every face is equally likely.
How do advantage and disadvantage work?
With advantage you roll two d20 and use the higher, with disadvantage the lower. If you have both, they cancel out and you roll one d20.
Are my rolls saved anywhere?
No. The list of recent rolls only lives on this page, nothing is sent to the server.
